Like in many places, the diving and snorkeling tourism in the Red
Sea, Egypt experienced an incredible increase since the 1980s. Not
only the direct influence of tourists lead to extreme changes in the
region. Indirect impacts, like over fishing, land development for
hotels, which even blast parts of the reef for the creation of a
sandy beach, are now-a-days no singularities anymore.
The dive sport company
SUBEX, which
is engaged in the protection of the coral reefs of the Red Sea for
years, organized a symposium in El Quseir, Egypt in December 2005.
For the first time, a committee including members of the Egyptian
government, environmental organizations, the scientific community,
tourism and media, as well as divers' associations, got together to
set a sign for the protection of the coral reefs. A united statement
was developed which was named after the place of origin - "EL QUSEIR CHARTA"
With the voluntary signing of the EL QUSEIR CHARTA
each signatory agreed to recognize his or her responsibility to
protect marine habitats. Moreover, he or she undertakes to actively
protect coral reefs for now and future generations.
Everybody is asked to get involved in the protection of the
wonderful coral world!
